12 Month Deals
The 12 month contract is very popular for many phones now as it doesn't involve a lengthy tie-in, leaving you free to change plans after about 11 months. However there is a price to pay for the privilige if you want a 12 month contract on a high-end handset like the iPhone 3GS both in the initial cost of the phone and the monthly tariff you get. O2 have never done a 12 month contract for the iPhone 3GS and so far there isn't one on Orange either, so it will be interesting to follow the price wars between O2, Orange and later Vodafone as they try to compete for the iPhone market.
Latest! Tesco are the first retailer to offer the iPhone on a 12 month contract, from December 14th, but it comes with a hefty price tag upfront. The iPhone 3G on a 12 month contract is only £20 a month but costs £222 to buy - the 3Gs is £320. So over the life of the contract the 16GB 3GS iPhone will cost £46.67 a month, compared with £37.89 a month over two years with Orange and O2. However, Tesco point out that its customers' total spend would be £560.04 against £909.36 with O2 and Orange.
