Orange iPhone

Music on the iPhone

So what kind of music capability can you expect from your Orange iPhone? As it's half phone, half ipod the answer is "superb". The iPhone 3GS is available in two versions - with 16GB or 32GB of memory - so the storage is excellent, as 32GB amounts to between 7000 and 8000 songs, taking the average MP3 to be 3 or 4 MB in size. Battery-wise you can expect up to 30 hours of audio playback time, but if you combine this with the talk time you use on a normal day you'll probably end up charging the phone every night if you listen to a lot of music.

When it comes to audio quality the iPhone 3G and 3GS use an improved audio chip to the original iPhone, called the Wolfson WM6180C audio codec. Anyone who is accustomed to using an ipod will find the same music quality on the iPhone.

One of the new features in the iPhone 3GS is voice control, which recognises very accurately any name from your phonebook - this is great for music control too, so if you say "Play a song by The Killers" it will pick out those songs from your music library. Like any iPod the iPhone also has Soundcheck (a compression feature which is meant to even out the volume difference between songs but actually doesn't sound great) and a range of EQ settings to choose from.
